LAHORE - University of Lahore (UoL) clinched the HEC Inter-varsity Rugby Tournament trophy after crushing University of Central Punjab (UCP) by 28-0 in the final here at Punjab University Rugby ground.
According to PRU representative, Syed Moazzam Ali Shah, the HEC Intervarsity rugby sevens tournament was organized by UMT, in which universities from across Punjab participated including Superior University, FFCU, LGU, UVAS, GCU, LUMS, UoL, UMT, IUB and Punjab University.
In this one-day event, Superior University beat FFCU by 24-5 in the first match, LGU beat UVAS by 20-0 in the 2nd game, LUMS recorded victory against GCU, UOL beat UMT by 22-7, IUB beat Superior University by 21-0, UCP beat LGU by 19-5 and Punjab University beat LUMS by 38-0.
After league games, four best teams played the semifinals. In the first semifinal, UOL beat IUB by 39-0 while in the second semifinal, UCP beat PU by 29-5. Before the final, the third and fourth position match was played that proved a one-sided affair as PU thrashed IUB 20-0 to claim the third position. In the final, UoL outclassed UCP by 38-5 to clinch the coveted trophy.
At the concluding ceremony, PRU Development Head Shakeel Amhed Malik distributed trophies and souvenirs among the winners and top performers.
He said that the PRU is investing heavily at grassroot level for the last three years and now the sincere efforts have started bearing fruit. “We see all Pakistan’s big universities have started playing rugby. The students have also started earning rugby scholarships and it is a great success of PRU and all rugby families.”
He also thanked Pakistan Rugby Union President Arif Saeed and Chairman Fawzi Khawaja, who played key roles in promoting rugby all over the country. They are eager to contribute more and want rugby further flourish in Pakistan.
