ISLAMABAD-As many as 31 members of the Pakistan contingent comprising 16 hockey players, two swimmers, two athletes, one shooter and 10 officials left Islamabad for Beijing on Thursday night to participate in the 29th Olympics Games, scheduled to start from August 8 in the capital city of China. All the 31 men embarked on PK-852 at 11.30pm from Islamabad International Airport, as the top officials of Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) saw off the players at the airport. Three officials including Chef-de-Mission Syed Aqil Shah, Major Majid Waseem (manager swimming) and Khalid Mehmood (manager athletes) will not leave for Beijing with the contingent. All these three top official will leave Islamabad for China on August 3. The secretary finance of the national contingent Akhtar Nawaz has already reached Beijing. Zeeshan Ashraf, captain of the hockey team, will be the flag-bearer of the Pakistan contingent at the opening ceremony, which will be held on August 8 in Beijing. Pakistan is participating in four disciplines: hockey, shooting, swimming and athletics. Pakistan qualified only in hockey while in the other three games - athletics, swimming and shooting  - the players got wild card entries. Hockey is the only hope for the medal for the country. The PHF has also announced incentives for the players for Beijing competitions. Each player will get US$300 on each pool match win. After qualifying for the final, the PHF would disburse US$5000 among each hockey player. In the past, Pakistan claimed three gold medals in the Olympics hockey competitions including 1960 (Rome), 1968 (Mexico City) and 1984 (Los Angeles). In 1984, Pakistan had overcome West Germany in the final 2-1 to win the gold medal after playing extra time of 30 minutes. Manzoor-ul-Hasan Junior was leading the national outfits.   As many as 12 teams have been qualified for the Beijing Olympics hockey competitions including defending champion Germany and these teams have been divided into the two pools. The 6th seed Pakistan are bracketed in-group B along with Australia, Netherlands, Great Britain, South Africa and Canada. However, besides defending champion Germany, Spain, South Korea, New Zealand, Belgium and hosts China are in group A. Green shirts will meet Great Britain on August 11 in their opening fixture of the Beijing Olympic Games 2008, which will be held from August 8 to 24.    Names of the contingent: Contingent's officials: Dr. Waqar Ahmed (contingent doctor), Brig Saleem Nawaz (secretary), captain (Retd) Zafar Iqbal Awan (security official).
