450 teachers made jobless after 3 years

LAHORE In open defiance of the government policy of regularising the contract employees, some 450 Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) recruited through Public Service Commission on contract basis have been terminated after mandatory three years. Fresh teachers have been inducted to run the classrooms. This happened in federal government schools in a number of districts ahead of the start of next academic session from September 1 after the summer vacations are over. More than 450 Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) including 225 female teachers are working on contract basis in the federal government schools. Educational Institutions (FGEI) Directorate has been arbitrarily thrown out of job through an executive order in open defiance of the government policy of regularising contract employees. The termination came after assurances to the teachers that their cases have been sent to the ministry for regularisation. The 450 TGT teachers were recruited in August 2007 through the Federal Public Service Commission on two years contract basis with the assurance that they will be regularised at the end of the contract period. But instead of regularising them in August 2009, their contract was extended by one year up to August 2010. These teachers were expecting that in August 2010 their service would be regularised. But, in July this year, someone in the FGEI Directorate decided to terminate the services of these 450 fully qualified and experienced teachers without any regard for the consequences of the decision. These teachers having MA, MEd degrees have been performing their duties quite satisfactorily in their respective schools for the last three years but now they find themselves without any job. Termination of service notice has been served on all the teachers. The 450 hapless teachers are in a state of agitation. One of the affected teachers talking to this correspondent said, This is sheer injustice against the poor teachers and a violation of our fundamental right to work. We have been doing our jobs quite satisfactorily. We had hoped after three years our service would be made permanent but instead our services have been terminated. Another TGT teacher said all those whose services had been terminated were thinking of appealing to the president and the prime minister to issue directives to the concerned authorities to withdraw the termination notice and allow them to work on extended contract until their services were regularised through FPSC. Some vocal teachers, expressing their anger and bitterness over the arbitrary decision of FGEI Directorate said they would hold street demonstrations to draw the attention of the president and the prime minister to their plight and continue agitating until they get justice.
