LAHORE - The recent outbursts by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif against President Asif Ali Zardari seem to have destroyed the reconciliation earlier reached between the Punjab governor and the chief minister regarding appointment of Vice-Chancellors in Public sector universities. Rejecting chief ministers nominee, Governor Khosa has approved the name of Prof Dr. Muhammad Zafarullah as Vice-Chancellor of Multans Bahauddin Zakarya University, but the Punjab government has blocked issuance of a notification in this regard. Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had recommended the name of Dr. Syed Khawaja Alqama for the slot, but the governor while disagreeing with his choice, has approved the name of Dr Zafrullah, declaring him the most suitable person for the job. It has been learnt that the governor is determined not to approve the name of chief ministers nominee for University of Sargodha where the CM wants Dr. Akram Ch as Vice-Chancellor. It may be noted here that after a meeting between Punjab governor and Punjab Minister for Law Rana Sana Uallah last week, two provincial heads had agreed to appoint vice-chancellors through mutual consultation. But the governor seems to have changed his mind after use of harsh words for President Zardari by the chief minister in a PML-N meeting recently held to elect party officebearers. While approving the name of Dr. Zafrullah as BZU VC, the governor has noted that Mr Zafarullah has gained varied administrative and academic experience while serving at different positions. It merits mention here that the Search Committee constituted by the Punjab government had earlier recommended names of three candidates - Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Dr. Syed Khawaja Alqama and Prof Dr. Muhammad Zafrullah - in order of merit for consideration of the Governor. While appointing Dr. Zafrullah as VC of BZU, the governor has exercised his powers under Section 14(1) of Act 1975 of Bahauddin Zakarya University.
