KARACHI The ongoing vicious spate of violence in Karachi engulfed another 11 lives on Sunday, bringing just two days toll to at least 28 deaths. The debilitating spree of firing, grenade attacks and target killings continues unabated despite the launch of a government-led peace initiative and participation in a peace rally, the other day, by MQM and ANP, the main parties thought to be responsible for the strife. Also the security agencies are continuing their hunt for the militants in different neighbourhoods of the city and there is heavy deployment of police and Rangers in the troubled areas, but the efforts to stem violence have failed so far. Police say eastern and western zones of the city, including Orangi Town, Liyari, Landhi and Gulistan-e-Jauhar, remain highly volatile. Surjani Town was worst hit where five people were killed. Armed men kidnapped and killed Bacha Khan and his nephew Sajjad Khan within the jurisdiction of Surjani Town Police. Later, armed men shot down an ANP activist, Tahir Khan, in the same area. Following the killings, tension gripped Surjani Town, Khuda ki Basti and Taseer Town where armed groups restored to intense firing, forcing suspension of commercial activities and confining residents to their homes. Police and Rangers kept out of the area as two groups of Pakhtoons and Siraikis remained engaged in firing at each others positions with sophisticated weapons that killed another two unidentified people. At least a dozen people including Faizan, Allah Noor, Jamil, Abdul Jabbar, Bukshullah and Naqeeb were also wounded during exchange of fire. Heavy contingents of Rangers and police were called but initially they were unable to enter the area. Police sources said that armed men also set two shops and nearly half a dozen pushcarts on fire while the office of Punjabi-Pakhtoon Organising Committee of MQM and a marriage hall were partially damaged by fire. Later, the police managed to enter the area and police sources said that situation had been brought into control. In Orangi Town, Pirabad, Bukhari Colony, Pathan Colony and Banaras also remained tense due to the ongoing violence. Two young men including Zurmai Jan, 22, were found dead while over one-and-a-half dozen others were wounded in these areas. Bodies of another two young men were found in Orangis Pakistan Bazaar Police remits. Five people, Sagheer, Khairullah, Shah Wali, Naseebullah and Owais, were injured during intense firing in Bukhari Colony while over 14 people were hurt in Pirabad when armed men stopped a bus and beaten up the passengers with sticks and batons. The injured included Khalid, Irfan, Adnan, Liaquat, Ashfaq, Ajmal, Saeed and Asadullah. Bodies of two young men were found in Urdu Bazaar in Aram Bagh Police remits and Sher Shah Police remits. Separately, Munawar Baloch, who was injured in a firing incident on July 24 in Sher Shah area, succumbed to his injuries at the Civil Hospital. On Saturday, 17 people including a police official were killed in various incidents of violence. Rival groups on Saturday exchanged fire in Sharpao Colony, killing Azeem Qadir, 35, and Dilshad Hanif, 34, at Hussaini Chowrangi. Both the men had recently rejoined MQM along the Amir Khan faction of Muhajir Qaumi Movement-Haqqiqi. Also on Saturday, Sadaqat, 32, and his younger brother Murtaza, 22, were shot dead while sitting in their van near Bismillah Stop at Manghopir Road in the remits of Pak Colony Police. Police said the victims hailed from Badin. Bodies of two young men were found near Malir River in the jurisdiction of Korangi Industrial Area Police. An MQM activist was shot dead in Baba Wilayat Ali Shah Colony in Orangi Town. 32-year-old Muhammad Zahid was standing outside his home when armed men on a motorcycle sprayed bullets on him. Head constable Abdul Rahim was shot dead near Ranchore Line cloth market in the precincts of Nabi Bux Police. A landlord of the interior Sindh was gunned down near Safora Chowrangi. Gulistan-e-Jauhar Police officials said that 55-year-old Ghulam Rabbani was killed when he went out to buy milk. An activist of ST was shot dead while a passerby was injured in Godhra Colony by unidentified attackers. Victim Asif was a resident of Sector 5-G, New Karachi. In Landhis Khurramabad, 23-year-old Umair was killed by his kidnappers. Another man, Gull Shah, 44, was targeted killed near Timber Market in Landhi-89. In another incident a man was shot dead in Usmanabad area in the remits of Garden Police. Victim Muhammad Tariq, a resident of Ramswami, was kidnapped on Friday and on the wee hours of Saturday police found his body near the Garden Medical Centre. Body of an unidentified young man was found in Park Street in Bukhari Colony. A cable operator, Tahir, 24, was shot dead near Nullah Stop in the limits of New Karachi Police. Four armed men on two motorcycles came at a hardware shop in Abdullah Heights at Block 17 Gulistan-e-Jauhar and shot dead shop owner Aziz while three customers, Tanveer, Kashif and Karim, received bullet injuries.
