The blame game

There is no doubt that the corruption in all its manifestations is rampant in our country. It includes misuse of manpower, transport, funds and of course time. Besides the government or semi-government departments, the political parties in power are leaving no stone unturned to make illegal money; perhaps they think that there will not be any "tomorrow" for themand mustmake hay while the sun shines as the proverb goes. One of the parliamentarians once(he was then out of the government but now he is part of the government)told the nation on the electronic media that the motto of the government is "Lutto te Phutto" meaning make the maximum money while in power and then leave the country once out of power. In TV talk shows, the general public is really flabbergasted when they listen to the loot and plunder of the present and that of the past rulers or so-called ourdemocratically electedleaders. When the leaders who are not in power point out the corruption of the present rulers, the government representatives enumerate the bunglings of their leaders when they were in power and in the heat ofemotions they reveal many things. The figures in this blame game are not in millions but they are in billions. To have an idea how much is a billion, I have worked out the amount for my fellow citizens. If one spends Rs 10,000 per day, it would take 277.78 years to consume Rs one billion. But here our leaders are rolling in many billions of rupees in various scams. Who is right and who is wrong in this blame game? I think no one is wrong.Every person barring a few exceptions who has been in power has minted money in billions by corruption andhencedeprivedthe national exchequer by that much amount. They are national criminals and must be tried. All the looted money should be retrieved from these plunderers without any exceptionand deposited in the government treasury. As an analytical senior citizen of the country (over 70 years of age), I have not seen any Mr Clean after the death of Quaid-i-Azam. Everyone in power worked for self-interest and obliged his close relatives and other cronies. There has not been any merit in the appointments and the deserving persons always perished. Theleaders in power do not allow the accountability by any commission or court of enquiryand create hurdles to save theirs or their kins skin. I think they are waiting for the wrath of Allah which is bound to come. MUHAMMAD AZHAR KHWAJA, Lahore, July 29.
