'Q' demands holding of LG polls in 90 days

LAHORE - Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly Ch Zaheerud Din while demanding holding of local bodies polls in 90 days said that appointing administrators and partisan election commission authority for the elections was part of pre-poll rigging. He was addressing a media conference on Monday at Muslim League House. PML-Q leaders including Mohsin Leghari, Col (r) Muhammad Abbas, Iqbal Langrial, Muhammad Akram Ch, Ahmed Yar Hiraj, Dr Samiya Amjad, Samina Khawar Hayat, Khadija Farooqi, Dr Faiza and Seemal Kamran were also present on this occasion. Ch Zaheer said that the PML-Q would not let the province to become a 'local bodies state of PML-N and they would protest inside and outside the provincial assembly if the powers of the local bodies representatives were given to bureaucracy. The PML-N has faced a crushing defeat in by-polls of Manshera, he said and added that PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif had run away from the by-elections of NA-123. He said that appointment of administrators and partisan election commission authority was negation of the Constitution and Charter of Democracy, and the PML-Q rejects it. He said that PML-N has promised in the CoD that it would hold local polls in three-month time under the provincial election commission after ending the tenure of the existing district governments. The PML-Q leader said that the PML-N by appointing partisan election commission wanted to create new constituencies and voter lists of its choice to rig the local bodies polls. He said that PML-N had fixed six months time to complete their plan of pre-poll rigging of local bodies elections and demanded that local polls should be held in 90 days and the powers should be transferred to the elected local representatives. He said that PML-Q would not let the provincial government to slash the powers laid down in the Local Government Ordinance 2001 for the welfare of the people of the province and PML-Q would seek remedy from the courts in this regard.
