The Speaker of National Assembly reconstituted the Parliamentary Committee to examine the NRO, although she had an obvious conflict of interest; her husband, you know, is a direct beneficiary of this black law. You might find this rather strange but even some members of this committee are beneficiaries of NRO too. Why is it that those charged with crimes ranging from corruption, money laundering, murder, even kidnapping for ransom, consider it inappropriate to submit themselves to the judicial review by simply claiming that they were politically victimized? If they are innocent as claimed, they must seek proper legal remedies, instead of seeking waivers in violation of the constitution. Why should elected or un-elected politicians and bureaucrats seek unconstitutional protection, when the constitution prohibits any discrimination in the eyes of law? It is such acts that eventually defame politicians and create a threat to the democratic process. People of Pakistan expect their politicians to behave in a more responsible manner than the khaki dictators who usurped power, destroyed judiciary and institutionalised corruption. Pakistan suffers today, more than anything else, because of the rampant corruption that has destroyed our institutions. It is because of corruption that the most sacred national documents like passport, National ID card etc are in possession of foreigner Taliban who threaten our national security. Smuggled ammunition and finances which fund the acts of terrorism are also a by-product of unchecked corruption within our security establishment, customs and border security agencies. The biggest threat to Pakistan is from institutionalised corruption. -SHAHZAD KHALIL, Sialkot, October 31.
