LAHORE - A teenage boy shot dead his elder sister for bringing shame to the family at their village house in Satu Katla police precincts on Wednesday.
Police said it was a case of honour killing. The victim was identified by police as 24-year-old Mahwish, the eldest of five siblings and a resident of Satu Katla village.
The killer is said to be 19-year-old college student Sahar Ali, who fled soon after the shooting.
A police officer said the girl had eloped with a man. Her father got registered a kidnapping case against the accused named by police as Arif. The police conducted a raid, arrested the alleged kidnapper, and later handed over the girl to his parents two days after she left home.
Another official said the girl was handed over to her father Nishan Ali. Sahar Ali, the eldest son of Nishan Ali, opened straight fire on his sister after a brief argument over her affair. Mahwish sustained multiple bullet wounds and died on the spot.
The police later reached the crime scene and shifted the body to the morgue for an autopsy. A murder case was also registered against Sahar Ali on the complaint of his father. The police were investigating the killing with no arrest made yet.
No respite in honor killings new despite laws
The anti-honour killing legislation came into force in the country almost one year ago. But the new laws with harsher punishment for the perpetrators have failed to the practice of killings in the name of so-called honour even in the urban parts.
According to the Human Right Commission of Pakistan, at least 280 such murders were reported by the independent rights groups from October 2016 to June of this year. Rights activists say the actual number of honour killing cases could be much higher because of misreporting by police and relatives of the victims.
