ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court was requested on Monday to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Attorney General Irfan Qadir for writing a letter to the chief election commissioner asking him to disobey the court order regarding disqualification of 11 parliamentarians over dual citizenship.
Syed Mahmood Akhtar Naqvi, a citizen who had earlier moved the court against parliamentarians for having dual citizenships, appealed to the court to take notice of attorney general’s letter to the chief election commissioner.
The petitioner also made a request to the court for imposing a ban on appearance of attorney general in the court as principal law officer and putting his name on the exit control list (ECL). The attorney general wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ibrahim to take action against the parliamentarians having dual citizenship under the law instead of the court order. On September 20, a three-judge SC bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, disqualified 11 parliamentarians for having dual citizenship and directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to de-notify them.
Online adds: Zahid Hussain Bokhari, counsel for property tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain, says Shoaib Suddle had family relationship with Arsalan Iftikhar therefore justice could not be expected from him. He was talking to mediamen at Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday. He went on to say he had no personal differences with Shoaib Suddle but he had reservations only on the methodology adopted in formation of commission.
Shoaib Suddle commission was not authorised to probe into Arsalan Iftikhar case because an individual could not hold inquiry of a case of such significant and sensitive nature. Shoaib Suddle had personal relations with Arsalan Iftikhar family therefore, we cannot expect justice, he added. To a question, he said Shoaib Suddle Commission had again summoned them on October 4 but they would not appear before the commission unless review petition against the commission was decided.
