Gen Bajwa says Pak-US share excellent strategic relationship

ISLAMABAD - Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa said Saturday that Pakistan does not believe in camp politics and seeks to expand and broaden its ties with both China and the US.

“Sadly, the Russian invasion against Ukraine is very unfortunate as thousands of people have been killed, millions made refugees and half of Ukraine destroyed,” COAS General Bajwa told an international ‘Islamabad Security Dialogue’ here.

“Despite legitimate security concerns of Russia, its aggression against a smaller country cannot be condoned. Pakistan has consistently called for an immediate cease-fire and cessation of hostilities,” COAS said. He also called for an urgent dialogue between all sides to resolve the conflict.

While praising the Ukrainians for effectively resisting the Russian aggression, COAS said, “This has given a heart to smaller countries that they can still defend their territory with smaller but agile forces against an aggression by a bigger country by carrying out selective modernisation in equipment and adopting noble ideas,” the Pakistan Army Chief said. “Pakistan enjoys close strategic relationships with China. Equally, we share a long history of excellent relationship with the United States which remains our largest export market; UK/EU vital to our national interests; Russian aggression on Ukraine is very unfortunate, this is a huge tragedy,” General Qamar Javed Bajwa said this while addressing the Islamabad Security Dialogue here.

“Pakistan desires immediate cessation of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine and is doing everything it can to resolve the issue.” COAS said that despite legitimate security concerns of Russia, its aggression against a smaller country can’t be condoned.

Says Indian supersonic cruise missile firing into Pakistan raises serious questions

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine must be stopped immediately: COAS

The Army Chief said Pakistan continues to believe in using diplomacy and dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues with India including Kashmir dispute. “Pakistan wants peaceful resolution of Kashmir issue and is ready to move forward with India through dialogue and diplomacy,” he said. “Pakistan wants peace within and peace without. It’s the regions that grow and not the countries.”

Expressing deep concerns over the recent landing of an Indian supersonic cruise missile inside Pakistan territory, the Army Chief said this raises serious questions about India’s ability to manage and operate high end weapon systems. He said Pakistan has called for a thorough probe into the incident. “We expect India to provide evidence to ensure Pakistan and the world community that their weapons are safe and secured.”

The Army Chief said Pakistan continues to work closely with International community to pursue peace and stability in Afghanistan. He said it is our collective responsibility towards the Afghan people to ensure timely and adequate humanitarian aid flows into the country. He warned that the consequences of our inability to address the humanitarian crisis will lead to refugee crisis and will again make Afghanistan an epicenter of terrorism.

General Qamar Bajwa reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to defeat terrorism. “We have made remarkable gains against terrorism which have resulted in marked improvement in the internal security situation of Pakistan.” However, he said, the threat of terrorism and violent extremism remains and ‘our struggle will continue till we eliminate the last terrorist and the cause of terrorism from the region.’
