Nasir Kazmi: heart-touching voice

March is the month that is attributed to a poet who created his unique style and values, which still attract poetry lovers. Nasir Kazmi (1925-1972) was a poet of par excellence, who just not wrote Ghazals but also turned towards Nazms and made a mark in that genre as well. His prose is equally beautiful. Although, it is a matter of fact that he is widely appreciated for his beautifully crafted Ghazals and is considered one of the founders of the modern Ghazal. While going through his poetry, one feels that it is written in prose style and exactly this is the point from where Nasir distinguishes himself from his contemporaries. Berg-i-Nai was his first collection that appeared in 1952 and was well received by poetry lovers and critics alike. The partition of India was an incident that kept the people hostage for a long time across the border. Though so many writers and poets created great fiction and poetry in the backdrop of partition, but according to renowned critic, Muhammad Hasan Askari, there was the only voice of Nasir Kazmi who brought that experience in his Ghazals marvellously. After Berg-i-Nai, the following poetic compilations appeared: Deewaan (1972), Pehli Baarish (1975), Nishat-i-Khwab (1977). Books other than poetry also appeared. The poet did not live longer, but he is still capable to enthrall the readers.

“Girafta-dil hain bahut aaj tere divane ḳhuda kare koi tere siva na pahchane

Tire aane ka dhoka sa raha hai diya sa raat bhar jalta raha hai

Ai dil kise nasib ye taufiq-e-iztirab milti hai zindagi me ye rahat kabhi kabhi”
