13 guilty cops still off the hook

DASKA - The Lahore High Court has ordered the registration of a case against 13 police officials, accused of kidnapping, brutally torturing, humiliating and thrashing three citizens of Hajipura locality in a 'trumped-up case. The FIR No 476/2011 was lodged by a trader Mirza Abdul Hamid Mughal against Daska City SHO Inspector Irfan Sulehria, Sub-inspector Nadeem Ashraf, ASI Shahbaz Ahmed, Muhammad Iqbal (Muharrar), Head Constable Mushtaq Ahmed, Constables Muhammad Shabir alias Bara, Muhammad Shabir alias Chhota, Hassan Ali alias Don, Muhammad Kashif alias Kashi, Ali Akbar, Mubashar, Ehsan Ullah and Ansar under sections 148, 149, 343 and 452 of PPC. As per detail, the police officials broke into the house of a religious cleric Sain Muhammad Riaz in Hajipura area at midnight on May 26, and kidnapped Muhammad Riaz and his son Fiaz Ahmed, and then abducted their neighbour Muhammad Asif in the same way. The three citizens were mercilessly tortured with their beards pulled and their turbans disgraced, and were forced to drink the police officials urine and eat their stool when they demanded water in hot and humid weather in Daska City Police Station, where they were kept in illegal detention for several days. FIR revealed that the citizens were tortured in the murder case of Muhammad Saleem, the younger brother of Mirza Abdul Hamid Mughal, who was murdered on May 20, whereas, Mirza Hamid actually lodged a case against the accused Aqeel Ahmed and Abdul Majeed and not the innocent citizens. The SHO demanded Rs0.3million as a ransom for the release of the detainees. Upon which the families approached the Lahore High Court and the detainees were recovered by the LHC special bailiff during a raid at the police station and were produced in the court on May 31. The LHC took serious notice of the brutality and ordered a medical check-up of the victims by the Punjab Legal Medical Surgeon Lahore. The medical report confirmed 22 torture signs on the body of the religious cleric Sain Riaz and 10 torture signs on his son Fiaz and neighbour Asif, as per the FIR. Following the report, the LHC ordered the Daska City Police to register a case against the accused police officials, besides ordering District Police Officer (DPO) Bilal Sadiq Kamiyana to take a stern legal action against the accused police personnel. The Daska City Police have started investigation with no arrest in this regard. The senior police officials were reluctant to answer regarding the arrest of the accused who were still working on their positions despite orders from LHC to the contrary. Moreover, no legal action has been taken against the police officials. Meanwhile, the grieved families urged Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Punjab Police Inspector General Javaid Iqbal, Regional Police officer (RPO) Gujranwala Ahmed Mubarak Ahmed and DPO Sialkot Bilal Sadiq Kamiyana to take serious notice of this brutality and ensure the timely arrest of the police officials.
