Child Labour Unit established

LAHorE The Punjab Labour Department with assistance of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the European Commission (EC) established a child labour unit here on Tuesday. Punjab Labour Secretary Abdul Rauf Khan while addressing a ceremony organised on the occasion here said that the unit would serve as focal point for research awareness and community mobilisation activities to curb child labour in the Punjab. He said a project had already been launched in Sahiwal to eradicate child labour through education, micro-credit, skill training and community monitoring. He said under this project 3,250 children were being imparted education. He further said that four districts in the province would be selected for testing and implementing methodologies evolved by the ILO and the EC to eradicate the menace. Rauf informed that the Punjab Labour Department had opened schools for children who were working at brick-kilns, and 3,200 children had been enrolled so far in these schools. ILO representative Taseer Alizia, Director Labour Welfare Punjab Capt (r) Jehanzeb Khan and Child Labour Unit Incharge Saeed Awan also addressed on the occasion.
