ISLAMABAD - US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Phelps Munter called on Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani in GHQ on Tuesday and discussed matters of mutual interests with him, said an ISPR statement. However, both ISPR and the US embassy were reluctant to unfold the details of the said meeting. When asked if a meeting took place between Munter and the Army Chief, a spokesperson of the US Embassy said 'I think so, however he did not share details of the meeting with this correspondent. Sources privy to the meeting informed that both the dignitaries discussed in detail the matters pertaining to war on terror and Pakistan Armys needs while taking on militants and extremism. When asked if the meeting discussed stance of Pak Army with regard to launching of new offensive in North Waziristan, sources said they were not aware of it. Cameron Munter is being seen visiting various places across the country soon after he took charge of his office. It is pertinent to mention here that the new US Ambassador believes in establishing people to people contact between Pakistan and the US. While meeting Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani soon after arriving in Pakistan, Cameron Munter had agreed with the Prime Minister to building up positive US image among the people of Pakistan through utilisation of the US assistance on people friendly projects. Experts believe that US Ambassadors meeting, with Army Chief General Kayani at a time when US drone attacks have been intensified in the frontier region, was a part of US strategy to somehow convince Pakistani authorities to start offensive against militants in North Waziristan.
