PR Islamabad - Students from Roots International Schools (RIS), Mahen Faraz (IB-PYP), Laraib Akhtar (AS-Level), Hanana Anwar (AS-Level) and Shazil Rasool (IGCSE-III) from Wellington and Richmond Campuses, along with their faculty advisor Shamaila Idrees attended the Summer Youth Programme 2016 at Michigan Technological University, says a press release issued here yesterday.
Each day at the camp students were taught different courses that included: digital photography, geological engineering and psychology in real world. The courses took them through the visual and practical journey of learning engineering, film production, molten metal casting, and more—all in an adventurous, fun, and hands-on way. It also gave the students a chance to experience a miniature version of college life.
Around 1,000 students travel to Michigan Tech’s campus each year from throughout the country and around the world; places such as South Korea, Canada, Spain, and Japan, to name a few! This year, yet again, the Rootsians were also able to grab this opportunity in their hands and get a life-long experience. Such camps not only allow time for each student to develop a sense of accomplishment through the development of new skills but also cultivate special rapports and enhance personal growth and independence, which is the essence of the activity camp experience.
One of the courses, digital photography was a very intriguing program for our students and it helped them learn about the composition, lighting, and equipment used which utilises a digital camera and software. Darkroom techniques, colour, and design were also explored both on different locations (outdoors) and in a studio, thus developing student’s business skills as they fine-tuned their eye for details.
On the other hand, geological engineering involved demonstrations on how to balance the safety of our planet and its natural resources with the needs of society. From the field to the lab, research, report writing, measurement and analysis helped the students drive advancements in areas including water-supply maintenance, natural-resource management, disaster mitigation, and infrastructure design. The students also explored industrial practices for safely and efficiently adapting geologic features to society’s needs, while protecting the Earth and its inhabitants. The practical exhibition of volcanic eruptions and other natural disasters amazed the students and strengthened their learning process as well.
Psychology in real world was one subject which fascinated the students a lot. Following their inquisition, students researched about a bevy of topics, ranging from cognitive engineering and decision making to educational technology, individual differences in human performance, and human-centred design. The Michigan University’s state of art lab provided the students with latest technologies, like 3D head-mounted displays and virtual reality systems, as a platform to learn more about human spatial cognition.
The research conducted by students was based on SPSS scale that gives descriptive statistics for the variables
While the students were divided into groups, they were not just able to have an amazing global exposure to create and support cultural diversity but they also enjoyed many outdoor and social activities. The Summer Youth Camp helped the children learn they have the capability to do things on their own,” The camp also aimed to boost better understanding, mutual respect and communication among youths all over the world.
At RIS we believe that learning practices coupled with sports and social activities make academics performance of a student immensely easy and attractive. Every year 100’s of students are given an opportunity at RIS to participate in an international Summer Youth Program that helps them get what they dream and aim for to become successful.
The CEO RIS Walid Mushtaq, who works tirelessly and makes unparallel efforts to help his students achieve their goals, feels pride in his student subsequent to their illuminating experiences from these programs in different parts of world.
The entire faculty of RIS ascertains that every opportunity is being provided to their students to fulfill their potential, be it in terms of academic achievement or in the broader sense of personal development.
The aim under which the entire institutions works is that children must be provided ample opportunities to interact socially, discuss problems and find remedial measures, explore the unknown and reach out for information, accumulate facts and present them publicly with reasoning.
