PESHAWAR On the second day of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa games (women) events, Mardan region retained top position by grabbing the best athlete trophy here on Wednesday. Shabana of Mardan region was declared best athlete in the women athletic competitions in the first Khyber Pakhtunkhwa games being played here at different venues at Qayyum Sports Complex. On the second day of the first ever, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa games, a total of four events in the athletic held and Shahbana obtained 20 points and won the gold medal of the 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump for which she was declared best athlete of the gala. In addition, obtaining the best athlete trophy, Mradan also secured the overall trophy with 47 points, followed by Peshawar (23-points), Kohat (14-points), Dera Ismail Khan (11-points) and Hazara took three points. Shahbana won gold medal in 200m, followed by Asma of Mardan and Laiba of Peshawar. Similarly, in the 400m, Shahbana grabbed gold medal, followed by Sumble Khan of D.I. Khan and Asma of Mardan while in shot put Safina Naz of Kohat took gold medal, followed by Marium of Hazara and Nousheed of Peshawar while in long jump Shahbana got gold medal, followed by Laiba of Peshawar and Sumbal Jan of Kohat. Athletes from seven regions took part in the athletics. In baseball, Peshawar having services of six national players-Sundas Khan, Aysha, Nazia, Sidra, Zainab, and Hina Naz clinched the trophy of the baseball by defeating strong Mardan in the final and the score was 11-9. Likewise, Peshawar secured victory against Bannu by 5-0 in the first semi-final while Mardan upset Kohat by 4-1 in the second semi-final. In badminton, the gold medalist of the 3rd Inter-Provincial Games, Faiza and Gul Rukh, hailing from Hazara, upset strong Mardan by 3-2 in the thrilling battle. Apart from, Faiza, Gul Rukh and Alia won their singles while Munza lost her singles against Mardans Shaista while both Alia and Amin lost their doubles against Sumbal and Shaista of Mardan. In semi final, Hazara defeated Peshawar in the semi-final while Mardan outclassed Bannu team in the second semi-final. It is worth to mention here that the female games will continue till Nov. 25, while the prize distribution ceremony will be held on Nov. 29, 2010 of the overall games.
