LAHORE - Perhaps for the first time in City's history, Lahorites celebrated two Eids-one on Wednesday and the other on Thursday. While majority of people commemorated the carnival on Wednesday in line with the decision of the central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, some Khateebs (prayer leaders) in certain parts of the City, however, led the prayer on Thursday expressing reservations over the decision taken by the supreme body. The City mosques where Eid prayer was held on Thursday, include:Jamia Masjid Shah Enayat Qadri (Uchi masjid) at Bhati Gate, Jamia Masjid Hanfia Rizvia, Taxali Gate, Jamia Masjid Hanfia, Ghausia Samanabad and a mosque in Township area. Though the number of people attending prayer in these mosques on the second day was very small, but it set a new tradition of observing two Eids in the City. A good number of elderly people to whom this scribe talked to about the controversy did not remember having observed two Eids in the City before. They held ulema responsible for creating confusion among the public in this regard. The ulema who did not see eye to eye with their counterparts in the central body mandated to take a final decision about moon-sighting, held the opinion that evidence presented with regard to moon-sighting on Tuesday did not meet the criterion set by the Sharya (Islamic law), and hence they decided to offer Eid prayer on Thursday. They also believed that the central body took the decision about celebrating Eid on Wednesday under pressure from NWFP Senior Minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour who announced on Tuesday night that Shawaal moon has been sighted in many districts of the province. The minister even did not bother to wait for decision of the zonal Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which led to the controversy. Meanwhile, two Eids were also celebrated in parts of Gujranwala, Narowal and Faisalabad. Like in Lahore, a few people, however, offered Eid prayer in these cities. It may be noted that country as a whole kept up the tradition of observing three Eids, as the people in the Mohmad agency and other tribal areas celebrated Eid on Tuesday.
