KARACHI – Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad on Wednesday said mega projects of K-IV and S-III would be started soon to provide drinking water and sewerage facility to Karachiites.He stated this while inaugurating the upgradation project of water pumping stations of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, which is being implemented with financial collaboration of the USAID. US Consul General Michael Dodmen, Provincial Minister for Local Govt Agha Siraj Durrani, Information Technology Minister Raza Haroon and others were also present in the inaugural ceremony. The governor said that KWSB plays vital role to provide water supply to the metropolis. He said that after the completion of this mega project, the biggest pumping station of the world at Dhabeji was being run under KWSB. He said that the at least 25MW electricity is required to pump the drinking water at Dhabeji pumping station, which is the main source to provide the water in the city. The KWSB pays huge electricity bills to Karachi Electric Supply Company for using electricity at the pumping stations. Like its participation in other sectors in the country, the governor hoped that the USAID will continue its support to improve the infrastructure of water supply of KWSB. On this occasion, the US consul general in his speech said that various development projects were already under way in the Punjab and Sindh through the financial assistance of USAID. The US consul general said that USAID programme will help to improve the capacity of pumping stations of water board, besides the intervention will lead to save 40 percent energy.The partnership between USAID and KWSB would be continued in other projects for betterment of water supply in the City, he hoped. Dodman said that the US government had a proud history of supporting both the water and power sectors in Pakistan. One of our most important civilian assistance priorities is energy. This project will increase energy efficiency, increase overall water security and positively impact 25,000 households in this area of Karachi alone. He added that expanding energy resources is critical to Pakistan’s economic development. This project will boost efficiency rates thereby expanding resources available to meet Pakistan’s other energy needs.Meanwhile, KWSB MD Misbahuddin while sharing the detail of the USAID partnership said that with the $1m million project of foreign aid agency, all the pumping stations of the water board will start functioning as currently only 40percent pumping stations are under working.
