Two killed over old enmity

LAHORE - Two people were shot and killed over old enmity in Kahna in the wee hours yesterday.
Police identified both the victims as Kashif and Amjad, said to be the residents of Warraich village located in the limits of Kahna police.
Relatives of the victims told the police that two gunmen riding on a motorcycle appeared in the village early Tuesday morning. The gunmen, named as Ashraf and Younis, opened straight fire on Kashif and Amjad and then fled on their two-wheeler.
Kashif and Amjad sustained multiple bullet wounds and died on the spot. The police removed the bodies to the morgue for autopsy.
The police registered a double murder case against Ashraf and Younis and launched the probe. No arrest was made till late yesterday night.
In another incident of firing, a 45-year-old man was killed and another injured in Shahdara. The body was moved to the morgue for autopsy. The 50-year-old injured was rushed to a hospital with serious bullet wounds.
Investigators said the gun-attack took place near Barkat Market on Tuesday evening. Police were yet to ascertain the identity of the victims. Further investigation was underway.
Man dies: A 25-year-old man was killed and his friend wounded critically when a car bumped into their motorcycle near DHA.
Rescue workers said that Waqar and Kashif riding on a motorcycle were on their way to a nearby market when a car smashed into their motorcycle near DHA Phase-VI. As a result, Waqar died on the spot and his friend Kashif was rushed to a hospital in serious condition.
Police reached the spot and impounded the car. The body was handed over to the family. Further investigation was underway.
HANGED: A death row prisoner was hanged to death in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail yesterday.
The death row prisoner, Aslam had murdered a man over old enmity in 2003. Jail authorities handed over the body to his family for burial.
However, the execution of Farrukh Shahzad, also a condemned prisoner, was postponed as both the parties reached settlement.
200 criminals arrested in March: City police last month smashed at least 90 gangs of criminals by arresting their 212 members involved in robberies and other crimes.
A police spokesman said that the Lahore police also seized booty worth Rs10 million from their possession. At least 275 cases have been traced against these criminals, the spokesman said.
Similarly, the police arrested at least 1376 proclaimed offenders and court absconders during its campaign against most wanted criminals. Lahore DIG (Operations) Dr Haider Ashraf directed the field police officers to step up crackdown against criminals as part of the national action plan. All the divisional SPs were given special tasks in this regard.
In March, the police registered 417 cases and arrested 418 people for having illegal firearms. During its campaign against illegal weapons, the police seized five Kalashnikovs, 15-rifles, 17-guns, 517 pistols and revolvers, one carbine, 7 daggers, and 34774 bullets.
While taking action against drug peddlers, the police arrested 595 people and registered 581 cases against them. The police also seized 28-kg heroine, 164-kg charas, 4-kg opium and 5464 bottles of liquor.
