LAHORE - The officials of Punjab government are involved in character assassination of Sheikh Afzal, an accused in Rs 9 billion Bank of Punjab scam. These views were expressed by Haris Afzal, son of Sheikh Afzal, while addressing a press conference here at the Press Club on Sunday. He said that the case was still in the court and before the decision no one had right to declare his father culprit. His younger brother Hamza Afzal, lawyers Asad Manzoor Butt and Amir Shah were also present on the occasion. Punjab government is trying to defame our lawyers Babar Awan, Malik Qayyum and others by saying that these lawyers have received huge money apart from causal fee only to provide us illegal relief., Hairs said adding we paid Rs 5 million to Babar Awan, former federal minister for law, only to proceed our case in court and no other money had been given to him. Haris alleged that secretary to Punjab chief minister Tauqeer Shah, advocate general Punjab Khawaja Haris and other officials of Punjab government were disseminating wrong reports in media just to defame his family. He said former IG Special Branch Punjab Col Ehsaan threatened him when he was in custody of police to give statement against Chaudhary Pervez Elahi, that his (Haris) family had given money to Pervez Elahi for general election and against this statement the police would release him easily but he denied to give any such statement. After that assistant director National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Aftab and deputy director Rizwan, investigation officers, illegally used his name and submitted an application in the court in which they claimed that he had admitted to give huge bribe to their lawyers. Punjab government used this case for political purposes and forced our family to issue statements against Pervez Elahi. If we are guilty in the case then why government is not arresting the Chairman of Federal Board of Revenue Salman Saddique, Haris added. Responding to a question, Haris alleged that on the directions of Shahbaz Shairf, the members of Salvage Committee (SC) Khawaja Haris, Naeem-ud-din, Toqeer Shah and Mudassar Naqvi had purchased the assets of his family on throw away prices by their front men and was also trying to sale other assets on the same practice. The lawyers Asad Butt and Amir Shah said that their client, Sh Afzal, was not defaulter of Bank of Punjab. They said that the board of directors of BoP had given the approval for rescheduling the loans of their client Sh Afzal, so his loans were legal.
