Education, health top priority, says PM

LAHORE - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that under the new health policy 'Health for All it is governments top priority to provide health facilities to the common man. He said the government had allocated Rs31.57 billion for education and 23.15 billion for health sector during current fiscal year. The Prime Minister expressed these views while addressing the 10th Convocation of Allama Iqbal Medical College here on Saturday. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was the guest of honour at the ceremony while first lady Fozia Gilani, federal and provincial health secretaries, provincial ministers, parliamentarians, VC University of Health Sciences UHS and others were also present. The Prime Minister announced Rs30 million for the construction of women hostel at the college and Rs10 million for the establishment of cafeteria at Allama Iqbal Medical College. He said he had directed Federal Health Secretary to make arrangements for medicines from Karachi to this college and Jinnah Hospital Lahore. He had also directed for the establishment of a health research centre to tackle several diseases and asked the Federal Ministry for Anti-Narcotics to establish a Model Drug-Free City in Lahore. He said a number of steps were being taken for the provision of health facilities to the masses. He said to achieve the objective of the new health policy the private sector should also play its role. The Prime Minister said that he has directed the Ministry of Health to develop an effective system to counter several diseases. The Prime Minister also gave away medals to position-holders.
