‘Precautionary measures to be ensured at cattle markets to protect people from Congo virus’

KARACHI - Administrator Karachi Laeeq Ahmed has said that all precautionary measures should be taken to protect against certain germs found in urban animals, especially Congo virus, which are found in livestock markets.

The administrator said every year on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, a large number of sacrificial animals are brought for sale in the city for which special places have been set up. Therefore, special care should be taken in the cattle markets to ensure that the animal’s germs are not transmitted to humans. The spread of germs should be stopped and clean environment should be provided so that buyers in cattle markets can fearlessly buy sacrificial animals and perform the Sunnah of Abraham, he instructed the officials

He also directed the Medical and Health Services Department of the Karachi Metropolitan Municipality to inform the citizens about the necessary precautions in this regard so that the citizens are safe from any untoward situation, on the direction of Administrator Karachi Laeeq Ahmed, Medical and Health Services has issued a guideline to prevent Congo virus, urging citizens to take precautionary measures when buying sacrificial animals for Eid al-Azha and to wear facemasks when going to the cattle market.

Be sure to wear gloves and light-coloured, full-sleeved clothing to protect yourself from any germs or insects, especially ticks, wear protective gloves when inspecting sacrificial animals, and avoid eating and drinking at the cattle market and keep clean boiled drinking water with you.

If ticks are found on animal skins, avoid pulling them out empty-handed, as the infected blood can cause the Congo virus. Butchers must wear gloves when sacrificing animals, as sometimes animals are brought from areas infected with infectious germs, wash your hands thoroughly after sacrificing animals, keep sacrificial animals indoors or in a common altar where there is adequate ventilation, water for animal use should be properly maintained and covered after use, animal blood and remains should be disposed of properly, proper hygiene should be maintained at the place where animals are kept, before Eid-ul-Azha and on Eid days disinfectant sprays should be administered at the sites to protect them from germs.

Administrator Karachi Laeeq Ahmed said that it is the responsibility of the local bodies to provide a healthy environment to the citizens; germs cannot grow in a clean environment so we have to keep our home as well as the neighbourhood and surrounding environment free from all kinds of dirt. Yes, the best way to protect yourself from germs is to take precautions. It is important for children and adults to protect their own health and the health of others and to fully follow the instructions provided by the relevant authorities.
