Intel has unveiled a new design for chips that will allow more processing power to be crammed into smaller spaces, cost less and use less power. The new development is set to allow the exponential growth in computing power, described by 'Moores Law to continue for another generation. Intel has been working on the technology since 2002, but the products will not appear in new computers, tablets and mobile phones until towards the end of this year. The company made the announcement at a press conference in San Francisco where Intel senior fellow Mark Bohr calls the new tri-gate technology a major technical breakthrough and historic innovation in microprocessors. The term '3D refers to the transistor units that are the fundamentals of computer chips. Chips will be taller but leak less current and consequently use less power. BBC
