LAHORE - Former prime minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Monday appeared before the NAB for possessing assets beyond their known sources of income.

Both recorded their statements in the graft case before a three-member NAB team that had issued notices to them to appear along with the details of their assets.

The Chaudhry brothers were summoned in a case pertaining to misuse of authority, framed against them in 2000 before they joined hands with former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf.

The NAB had also summoned Finance Minister Ishaq Dar’s sons, but none of his family members appeared before the bureau team on Monday.

According to a NAB spokesperson, Hasnain Dar and Ali Dar, sons of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, were summoned to record their statements in the ongoing investigation against their father in a graft reference filed by the anti-graft body in compliance with the Supreme Court orders.

According to the NAB, Dar has acquired assets and pecuniary interests/resources in his name or in the names of his dependents worth Rs 831.678 million as per the investigation conducted so far. The sources said the NAB will again send notices to Dar’s sons for appearance.

Meanwhile, PML-Q leader Chauddhry Pervaiz Elahi claimed they had provided all the information which the National Accountability Bureau needed in a reference of possessing assets beyond known sources of income against him and his cousin Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain.

Addressing a press conference at his residence soon after appearing before the NAB Lahore along with PML-Q President Ch Shujaat, he said the bureau will be provided with any further information whenever it summoned them.

“We always give respect to the country’s institutions and fully cooperate with them. We provided all the information about our case and will certainly appear again along with the documents if the NAB required any other information,” said Ch Parvez who served as the Punjab chief minister during the Pervez Musharraf era.

Claiming to be clean-handed, he said even NAB failed to prove any wrongdoing against his family during the Musharraf tenure. “NAB had raided our house in Pervez Musharraf’s tenure, but could not find anything against our family,” he added. Ch Pervaiz said cases against them were made by every government whether it was of PPP or PML-N.

Ch Pervaiz Elahi also served as deputy prime minister in PPP’s tenure.

“135 false cases were initiated against us during Benazir Bhutto tenure. Our factory was raided by a team headed by Shehbaz Sharif in the presence of my late father and even gas and electricity bills were also checked, but everything was found right,” Elahi claimed.” He said Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif were then against them and during the last 10 years, they used every tactic and scrutinised all their properties, but found nothing.

“Even murder cases were registered against us under political influences in different government tenures. We are held accountable before every general election,” he said.

On this occasion, Ch Pervaiz stressed continuity of accountability process and said Shehbaz Sharif must be tried in Model Town case in which 14 people had been killed.
