MARDAN - Two police personnel were gunned down by unidentified gunmen in the limits of Shergarh Police Station on Monday, District Police Officer Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed told The Nation.

The official said that information was received to police that some people were smuggling narcotics. Acting on the top-off, the police set up a check point in the limits of Shergarh Police Station. The DPO added that meanwhile, two people passing on the road were signalled to stop for search, but the men instead of stopping opened fire on police. As a result, Hawaldar Shahbaz and Constable Muhammad Nawaz died on the spot.

The DPO said that the accused escaped after committing the crime, adding that soon after the incident, a police party reached the spot, cordoned off the area and launched a search operation but no one could be arrested so far.

Rescue 1122 shifted the bodies to Tehsil Headquarter (THQ) Hospital Takhtbhai for autopsy. The police registered case against the unidentified killers and started investigation.
