Initial estimates show flood ravaged Pakistan needs $30b for rehab: FM

Bilawal Bhutto urges all parties to stop politics and help flood affected people

KARACHI     -   Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said Thursday that there cannot be two Pakistan at the same time, one Pakistan is submerged in floods and the other is playing politics, adding that at the moment, all have to stop the politics and help the flood victims. The PPP Chairman, while addressing a press conference at Chief Minister House Karachi, said that the flood is not over yet as a large part of the country’s population is suffering from the natural calamity, adding that the water from the hilly areas of Balochistan is still flowing towards Sindh. He told reporters that out of the inundated areas, 50% of the rainwater has been drained, while the remaining areas are still under water. “If you visit Khairpur Nathan Shah and other areas, you can see ocean-like scenes on both sides of the roads,” he added. The foreign minister said that the recent flood is not caused by the river as in the past in the country, but is the result of record rainfall from the sky. He pointed out that due to the recent heavy rains, 33 million people have been affected in Pakistan, which is more than the total population of Australia and New Zealand, and even if the population of many European countries is combined, the number of flood victims in Pakistan would be more than theirs. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that during his recent visit to the United Nations, he asked one of his counterparts that if 90 percent of the population of his country was affected by a natural disaster overnight, would his government be able to handle them? In response, that foreign minister replied in a negative candidly. He expressed his satisfaction with the assistance received by the world community and said that despite the substantial assistance, it is insufficient because the number of victims is huge. Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that one-third of the country is submerged, but if you look at a few TV channels or head towards Islamabad, it seems that there is another country. He said that floods have affected the economy more than the Covid-19 pandemic, adding that agricultural crops standing on 4 million acres of land have been submerged, due to which there is a food security danger. He said that the actual damage would be assessed only after the water is drained out, adding that 110,000 acres of land in Balochistan is still under water. “ Initial estimates show that the country has suffered devastations requiring $30 billion for rehabilitations and restorations,” he pointed out. Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari emphasised that this natural calamity should be taken as it is, according to its severity. It cannot be acceptable that a politician would continue attempting to shine his negative politics while one-third of Pakistan is underwater, continue contesting elections and playing his political games. “If we are a country, we have to fight this natural calamity as a nation,” adding that until today there are affectees in Swat, as well as in South Punjab and Sindh. “The entire province except Karachi is submerged, but the infrastructure in Karachi has also been severely damaged,” he pointed out. Foreign Minister said that we have finally a Prime Minister who owns the entire Pakistan, who is visiting every rain-hit area of the country. He said that during the current floods, there is a person who is plotting to come to the government during this flood. “In the current situation, we will give priority to humanity, not politics,” he vowed. He said that whenever there is a natural calamity, Pakistanis have always fought together as one. When there was an earthquake during Musharraf’s regime, PPP did not launch long marches. “The people of Pakistan have seen every hardship and have come out stronger after that,” he added Chairman PPP said that his next target would be rehabilitation, and until the damage survey is done, relief and rescue work would continue. He said that we would highlight to the whole world that what the people of Pakistan are suffering today is the result of climate change.
