Minister of State for Finance, Hina Rabbani Khar, has opposed the imposition of tax on agricultural income presenting the same hackneyed arguments against taxing the income of farmers. A scion of the Khar family of big feudal lords, her agitation against imposition of the agriculture tax is understandable. However the real rub is that she does so on a reserved seat in parliament - from the quota of women parliamentarians on which only the daughters, sisters, wives, bhabhis and bahous etc of the feudals get into parliament. Ms Khar gives a false impression of representing the poor women whereas in reality the women of her ilk have no bonding with the poor and cannot even comprehend plight of the masses. It is high time the government did away with the present system of electing women parliamentarians on 'reserved' seats. -DR IRFAN ZAFAR, Islamabad, via e-mail, December 1.
