‘Media has role in fixing psychological problems’

LAHORE - Role of the media in overcoming psychological problems created due to incidents of terrorism and natural calamities is of great importance.
Speaking at a seminar on “Role of media in a society” at Mayo Hospital on Saturday, King Edward Medical University Psychiatry Department Chairman Prof Aftab Asif said that the media could raise morale of people through positive reporting of incidents of terrorism and natural calamities.
Representatives of electronic and print media attended the seminar.
Prof Aftab apprised the media about psychological impact on victims of terrorism and natural calamities.
He urged the media persons to ask such questions from affected persons that keep their morale high. He said that provision of information was basic right of every journalist but he/she should also keep in view ethics.
After Peshawar school tragedy, Provincial Steering Committee for Psycho Social Trauma was constituted on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister. A psychological trauma center has also been set up at KEMU with the aim to provide guideline to people to save themselves and to cope with the situation arising due to incidents of terrorism, he added.
He said that this workshop had been arranged for the guidance and training of media after imparting training to officials of Police and Rescue 1122.
