Two killed in rain-related incidents in Karachi

KARACHI Two persons including a child were killed in rain-related incidents while traffic chaos was witnessed on all thoroughfares for several hours during the rain, couple with thunder storm in the city on Wednesday. Thousand of vehicles remained stuck for hours in many areas including MA Jinnah Road, Shahra-e-Faisal, Shahra-e-Quaideen, Shahra-e-Liaquat, Nishtar Road, Tower, University Road, Sher Shah-Mauripur Road, Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road and Manghopir Road. Major portion of some roads were inundated with rainwater and traffic jam on main arteries also resulted in chaos-like situation on link roads including Shahra-e-Iraq, Dr Mohammad Hashim Ghauri Road, Arambagh, Fawara Chowk and Dawood Puta Road. Many motorists were found complaining that they suffered badly due to the terrible traffic mess while complaints of traffic jam were also received from Gulistan-e-Johar and Nazimabad areas. According the Metrological Department 96 mm rain has been recorded in Karachi. In the meanwhile, a massive power breakdown put Karachiites at their wits end when six grid station of the KESC including Baloch Colony, Landhi and North Karachi tripped, making people in near 40 percent areas of the metropolis to endure the agony. Meanwhile, rescue services informed that two people were killed in different rain-related incidents. According to details, an eight-year-old child was drowned in an artificial pond of rainwater in Block 15 Gulistan-e-Jahar near decent arcade. The Gulistan-e-Johar Police said that the identity of the child could not be ascertained while the incident occurred when he was playing during the rain. In the second occurrence, an unidentified vehicle hit a motorcyclist to death at ICI Bridge in the Jakson Police precincts. The police said that the victim, identified as Sajid Nazir, 35, was the employer of a local factory and was going somewhere when met the unfortunate incident. The rain began at about 3:30pm continued till night intermittently.
