RAWALPINDI - Defying the political pressure regarding admissions in colleges against the merit for new academic year 2008-09, several principals have opted to resign from their offices. Similarly, DEO Colleges also seemed to vacate his office disappointing from the prevailing situation as the political leaders are pressurising various colleges' administration to award admissions to their voters against the merit. It is worth mention here that every year boys and girls colleges' administration have to face political pressure for admissions for HSSC and BA/B.Sc against the merit. The sources told TheNation here on Sunday that last year former federal minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed stressed the colleges' principals for illegal admissions and now the MNAs and MPAs of PML-N and PPP high-up are stressing the college administration for admissions against the merit. On request of anonymity, a college principal told that she was threatened by a MNA for transfer as she refused to obey his order for awarding admission to the daughter of his supporter. She said that political leaders also misbehaved with teachers and other staff as well. The sources further told that Principle Post Graduate College for Women, 6th Road Ms Waseem Sikander was also threatened by the political leaders of the area. It should be kept in mind that the said college had clinched first six positions in HSSC this year. Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association (PPLA), President Prof Ilyas Qureshi, while commenting on the issue, said that political leaders reached in assemblies by getting votes from general public and they should change their attitude towards the new generation so that they could explore their abilities, he added. He warned that the matter would be pointed out before Chief Minister Punjab Mian Muhammad Shahabaz Sharif if political influence were not stopped.
