No cut in higher edu budget: Cheema

LAHORE Higher Education Department (HED) Punjab Secretary Ahad Khan Cheema has said that despite flood devastation and resultant cut in the development budget, there was no significant cut in the higher education budget and the revolutionary 4 years BS (Hons) programme in 26 colleges will go unabated with a strong political will backed by adequate finances. He was delivering concluding speech at a special seminar organised by the Higher Education Department on Introduction of 4 years degree programme and autonomous mode of governance in 26 colleges in the Punjab followed by a question/answer session on Tuesday. Punjab Education Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman presided over the function while Higher Education Commission (HEC) Executive Director Dr Sohail Naqvi, vice-chancellors of Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) and University of Gujrat Dr Bushra Mateen and Dr Nizamuddin respectively, Government College for Girls Samanabad Principal Dr Tasnim Akhtar, Government Islamia College for Girls Cooper Road Principal Prof Shahnaz also addressed on the occasion. DPI (Colleges) Dr Jalil Tariq, Additional Secretaries HED Yawar Hussain and Ch Mohammad Akram, principals, deans and heads of department of six autonomous colleges of Lahore, members of Board of Governors, students and parents were also present in the seminar. Earlier, HEC Executive Director Dr. Sohail Naqvi said that the government was planning to launch this programme since the past ten years. It is an attempt to giving voice and words to latent talent, which lies in our students. Education Minister Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman rounded off the discussion and said that quality education was top priority of the government. He said that the government could not think of privatisation of government institutions. He further said the government would give extension for one month in the admission for students of nine flood affected districts and also provide remission in tuition fee. Aghi Programme LAHORE - The students of Syed Public Girls School visited Aiwan-e-Karkunan Tehrik-e-Pakistan on a study tour on Tuesday. The students were informed about more than five hundred unique pictures and scenes of Pakistan Movement followed by a ceremony addressed by renowned intellectual Justice (r) Munir A Mughal. Meanwhile Mobile Unit 2 of NPT led by coordinator Abduslam visited Sahara House of Education, Kahna old. The purpose was to inform the students about the Pakistan Movement. Head of the institute Shaikh Tahir Ali presided over the ceremony here. Later on, the students were given prizes in the quiz programme and correct recitation of Allama Iqbals verses. Set of books was also given to school library.
