Surgery to reduce obesity performed

ISLAMABAD Shifa International Hospital added another feather in its cap by performing Laproscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery of an obese patient suffering from Morbid Obesity. The surgery was conducted by a team of surgeons headed by Dr Ghulam Siddiq, Consultant, General Surgeon with the help of Prof Mumtaz Mehr from Karachi. The surgery lasted for two hours. The patient had an uneventful recovery without any complication. This procedure was done with the help of a laparoscope, as a result the patients do not have problems which are associated with open surgery. Asian population is more prone to abdominal obesity and low muscle mass said Dr Ghulam Siddiq, Consultant General Surgeon Shifa International Hospital after performing surgery. While explaining advantages of this procedure, he said 50 per cent of the excess weight is lost within one year of surgery. Most diabetic patients are cured after this procedure, Hypertensive patients blood pressure is within control and in a years time do not require any strong medications for it. Dr Ghulam Siddiq said Morbid Obesity is a complex multi factorial disease and understanding of how it occurs is rather incomplete in the general public. Further explaining it, he said that involves social, cultural, physiological, metabolic and genetic factors. It is pertinent to mention the illnesses that attribute to obesity are increased prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus and low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Obesity is a chronic disease and successful treatment requires a lifelong effort.
