Consultations on between PPP, 'N

LAHORE Consultative process between the federal and Punjab governments is going on to implement the agenda announced by PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif. In this connection, both sides have agreed to constitute a committee comprising the top guns from the federal govt and the PML-N. On the other hand, the PPP leadership and the federal government have decided to conditionalise the announcement of new Punjab governor with the retention or expulsion of its ministers from the provincial cabinet. They are of the view that the decision about the new governor should be withheld till the PML-Ns decision and related strategy. According to the reliable sources within the govt, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif have agreed that the committee would present suggestions about various issues including slashing the govt expenditure and action against the corrupt elements. The final decision about the issue is expected to be announced in next 24 hours. The sources say the federal govt thinks that any move to separate itself from the Punjab cabinet can destabilise the system and, in case of a positive gesture by the PML-N, a moderate and competent person with an ability to safeguard the PPPs interests would occupy the vacant slot. The names like Qasim Zia, Amna Taseer, Zaka Ashraf, Mian Misbah-ur-Rehman and Jahangir Badr are under consideration in this regard. But if the PML-N chooses to enjoy a solo flight, a governor with having the guts necessary for keeping the Punjab govt within the limitations and giving it some tough time is a prerequisite. In this case, Mian Manzoor Wattoo, Babar Awan, Latif Khosa and a former bureaucrat are amongst the likely candidates. The govt sources in Islamabad say any extra ordinary development and emergency-like situation in Punjab can prove fatal for the whole system and the federal govt should adopt political path to tackle the PML-Ns strategy. It must select a balanced and mature person enjoying complete trust of the PPP leadership for governorship. They also say that the any attempt to weaken the Punjab govt can also upset Islamabad.
