Pakistan is awash with prescriptions that address the current political crisis. The first to hit the chattering circles was the Minus-One formula; offload CJ Chaudhry Iftikhar.Close on heels came its reaction, the Minus-Two formula; shed Chaudhry and Musharraf. Next came the Minus- Three blue print; drop Chaudhry, Musharraf and Dogar.By now the recipe had expanded somewhat with the Minus-Five formula; send them all home, Chaudhry, Musharraf, Dogar, Sharif and Zardari, the lot. Word has it that yet another formula has been floated after the TV footage of a dancing CBR chief and the spill-all interview of an ex-general. This one is called the Minus-6 formula and rubbing shoulders with the other five is one media mogul. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Penny wise and pound foolish are we. The government's post-oil- price-hike austerity drive is well publicised. The directives to government functionaries such as "no press conferences in five-star hotels" and "curtail air travel" etc. are pretty well known. But what happened to the previous government shopping orders. For instance it placed one for the purchase of three helicopters to facilitate VIP movements and this at an exorbitant cost of 24 million dollars. There is no news about the order being cancelled. And how does one explain the eighty plus, six Ministers including the Prime Minister junket to the Holy Land. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Someone may boast of a personal rapport with President Bush but the black coats are also busy building US connections. Word has it that they have a strong ally in the US Lawyers Guild, a major pressure group that looks beyond its borders. The Guild has formed a Pakistan Justice Coalition in the US and provides a platform to black coat activists visiting the US to promote their cause. Thanks to the Guild a team of American lawyers would soon visit Pakistan to add that extra support to the black coat movement for Restoration of the Judiciary.
