ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Judo Federation (PJF) Wednesday honoured its players who had won medals in the 11th South Asian Games (SAG) held in Dhaka from January 29 to February 9th. A grand reception was arranged here at a local hotel to honour the players who won laurels for the country in Judo and Pakistan finished second behind India in the SAG 2010. Director General Pakistan Olympics Association Major Muhammad Afzal was the chief guest on the occasion while PJF President Col Shuja Rana, PJF Vice President Rafaqat Ullah Babar, PJF executive member Dr Salamat Ali Jafri, President Islamabad Judo Federation Zareef Ali Khan, and Secretary Pakistan Kabbadi Federation Rana M Sarwar also graced the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Col Shuja said Pakistan Judo Federation was formed in 2008 with the help of General Arfi Hassan, who gave Rs 0.5 million to start the Federation "and from then we have never looked back and Judo is gaining popularity among the masses with each passing day and the boys and girls are working very hard and getting more than expected results at national and international levels." Maj Afzal distributed cash awards among the players. Humera, the bronze medallist of SAG, got Rs 250,000 cash, silver medallist Fauzia Mumtaz Rs 0.5 million cash while Karamat Butt and Zafar Iqbal who both won silver medals in the event got Rs 0.5 million each. Gold medallists Zahid Iqbal, Ayatullah and Tanveer Ahmad were awarded Rs 1 million each cash prizes. Pakistan judo team manager Syed Wasim Hashmi thanked PJF for providing the opportunity to the players to perform at international level and promised to bring more medals in future too. He also requested the federation to announce cash prizes for team coaches also as they are ones who help players a lot and their services are unmatched.
