Victory for Lahore Lions in tape ball cricket

LAHORE The second Wing Chair Cricket Tournament came to an exciting conclusion after four evenings of flood-lit tape ball cricket at the Royal Palm Club, managed extremely well by M. Junaid, the Director Traxx of the host club and his team. And the honors and attractive cash prizes, in this second of the cricket series were grabbed by the energetic ones of the Lahore Lions team in a nerve wrecking final, watched by over a thousand members which mostly comprised families who cheered and applauded every decent stroke and every dot ball that was unplayable. Even though the tournament was limited to members who are mostly amateurs, much interest and color was added by the presence of Ijaz Ahmed, a former national cricketer and currently the national assistant coach and the way the Lahore Lions bowlers curbed his extraordinary talents in the final was creditworthy. Just a match earlier in the semi-final, Ijaz had smashed sixes with the utmost ease without looking flashy, but in the final, Omer Salamt of Lahore Lions caught him off guard and forced him to mishit and present a dolly catch and for Ijazs team that was a moment that left the other batsman crawling and crumbling, unable to produce free flowing strokes. Batting second, the Lahore Lions were put in a tight corner by Ijaz but then Junaid Ahmed came to the fore and tilted the battle Lahore Lions way, sensibly outwitting the Royal Eagles bowling might. Certainly cricket as a game capitalised on this occasion and all through the four evenings the sport mattered and for many reasons the evenings seemed kinder and full of cheers. At the conclusion of the event the prizes were distributed by Dawar Rashid of Wing Chair in a well attended ceremony.
