Specimen of died lion sent for histopathology analysis

KARACHI - Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar has directed concerned officers to submit report on the death of a lion in Karachi Zoo on Tuesday. He also directed that full and thorough details about this incident must be submitted without delay and said that no negligence or carelessness in taking care of animals and birds kept in the Zoo will be tolerated, said a statement.

Stern action will be taken against the official if he was found indulge in such practice.

Meanwhile the Karachi Zoo sources informed that specimen were sent to the local laboratory after carrying out postmortem of the dead animal and the chemical analysis report will be received in 15 to 20 days after which more details will come into fore.

The Director of Karachi Zoo said that two seized lions were shifted to the Karachi Zoo on October 19, 2017 by the Sindh Wildlife Department and Assistant Commissioner Gulshan-e-Iqbal which were brought for circus.

However, he said, one of the lions was not taking his feed properly and the quantity of food taken by him decreased after December 20, 2017 and expert Dr. Ms Asma Ghiwala was consulted who had prescribed medicines  after which the lion began taking his feed including meat and liver completely.

On January 07 the veterinary compounder contacted Dr. Asma again when he saw lion again in sick condition and the consultant again prescribed some medicines and the medical treatment of lion was started immediately but it lion died on January 09. The physical age of the lion is 18 years and the dead lion was of 13 years of age.
