The new government of Punjab has not yet come to grips with its various departments. LDA's minions have already begun to harass small businesses on the Multan Road industrial area ahead of Niazbeg Thokar on one pretext or another. Some time they issue summons to taxpaying businessmen late in the evening to appear before the LDA magistrate the next day, as if they were criminals. One does not even get time to consult one's legal advisers. Some of these notices pertain to various taxes that the local government is supposed to collect, amounting to clash of interests between two government departments. On other occasions, the LDA inspectors demand money for commercialising the industrial activity taking place in an industrial area meant for the purpose. Business community knows that Mian Shahbaz Sharif would not allow such highhandedness by LDA officials. But only if he knew. Mr Sharif, known for his ability to understand quickly and shoot straight, would not tolerate LDA's roughshod methods if they were brought to his attention. Business community on Multan Road industrial area demands the chief minister Punjab to issue clear instructions to LDA to cease its harassment of businesses forthwith. -MIRZA TUFTAN BAIG, Lahore, via e-mail, May 26.
