ISLAMABAD -
Auditor General of Pakistan Akhtar Buland Rana confirmed on Sunday that he has received arrest warrants issued by tax ombudsman last week and would face the allegations levelled against him.
"I confirm receiving arrest warrants. I will discuss the matter with my legal team and respond to the allegations levelled against me," Rana told The Nation when contacted on Sunday night.
Reportedly, Federal Tax Ombudsman Dr Shoaib Suddle summoned the AGP to appear before him and explain the matter relating to tax evasions and payments. However, when Rana failed to appear, Suddle issued arrest warrants against the former. Issuance of arrest warrants by the tax ombudsman against the auditor general of Pakistan, a constitutional post, has ignited a hot debate in the power corridors.
Many term it unwise to issue arrest warrants against an officer of the calibre of AGP, a constitutional post equivalent to that of a judge of superior judiciary.
