Federal Cup Tennis reaches quarters stage

Aqeel Khan, Yasir Khan, Usman Ijaz, Ahmed Chaudhry, Shahzad Khan, M Abid, Usman Rafiq and Jalil Khan advanced into the quarterfinals of the 28th Federal Cup National Ranking Tennis Championships 2013 after defeating their respective opponents here at Senator Dilawar Abbas PTF Tennis Complex on Sunday.
Shahzad caused the first upset of the tournament when he eliminated Sanaullah of Peshawar in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, as he displayed excellent serve and volley game. Shahzad will now face 3rd Seed Abid in the quarterfinal.  While arguably the best and most eagerly anticipated match of the day was played between former Pakistan number 2 tennis player Jaleel and upcoming future hope Abid Ali Akbar.
Veteran Jaleel face stiff resistance from Akber. Jaleel won the match in an exciting and entertaining three sets. Jaleel was comprehensively outclassed in the first set1-6 but he showed he still had plenty to offer as he bounced back in style to take the second set 6-3. Jaleel continued his brilliant form in the third and deciding set and after some quality display of highly entertaining tennis, it was Jaleel who finally prevailed and take the set 6-4, thus winning the marathon match. Top seed Aqeel and 2nd seed Yasir registered straight sets victories.
In the Ladies event Wania Khan of Karachi made the major upset of the day by eliminating 4th seed Kaynat, who was also the member of Pakistan Junior Fed Cup team, in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. In the Boy's U-18 singles pre-quarterfinals, M Mudassar, Hamza Bin Asif, Mian Bilal, M Muzammil, Syed Nofil Kaleem, Talha Bin Asif, Kashan-ul-Haq and Arham Atiq moved in the quarterfinals by beating their respective opponents in straight sets.
In the men's doubles, the best match of the day was played between Abid Ali/Babar Ali and Heera Ashiq/Imran Shouket. Abid/Babar won the first set 6-3 by playing excellent volleys at the net and powerful serves. Imran/Heera fought back in the match by winning the second set 6-4 by breaking 10th game of Abid/Babar. The match was decided in super tiebreak set, which was won by Abid/Babar 10-1 by displaying powerful game.
