LAHORE - After the terrorists’ attack on the Karachi airport, the Ministry of Defence has ordered red alert at Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore, said an ASF spokesman here on Monday.

He said, “We are always vigilant, but as per a prescribed procedure (SOP), we have to beef up security of our airport”. He said 11 officials of ASF had sacrificed their lives in the said attack and two of them belonged to Lahore. He said the dead body of one ASI, Sarwar, had reached Lahore while another body was scheduled to reach on Tuesday (today). He said the martyred ASF officials would be buried with full honour.

The ASF spokesman said body search of passengers as well as checking of their baggage and vehicles had been increased. “Patrolling of the ASF officials has been enhanced to avoid any untoward incident. Our morale is high and we are ready to meet any emergency,” he said and added terrorists could not frighten them. He revealed temporary passes of the officials had been cancelled and entry of irrelevant persons banned.

SP Cantt Sarfarz Virk visited the Lahore airport and met Chief Security Officer (CSO) Col Farhat Kayani. Both the officers reviewed the security arrangements made by ASF and police.

Our staff reporter fro Rawalpindi adds: Police and other law-enforcement agencies have beefed up security on Monday at Benazir Bhutto Islamabad International Airport (BBIIAP) after terrorist attack on Jinnah International Airport, Karachi.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Haroon Rashid Khan along with Station House Officer (SHO) Raja Muhammad Musaddiq reviewed arrangements at the airport.

However, during a visit paid by this scribe to airport, a very less presence of Airport Security Forces (ASF) officials and commandoes was witnessed in the airport premises. A very poor mechanism of body frisk was being adopted by the ASF officials on the entry gate of BBIIAP by ASF officials.

All the visitors were being checked randomly and in a very relaxed manner as a large number of people managed to enter the airport without proper checking, some thing seeking strong attention of Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

ASP Haroon while talking to The Nation said that a good number of policemen equipped with latest weapons have been deployed around the airport to protect it after gory incident in Karachi.

He said that the police would be assisted by sections of Elite Force commandoes.

Moreover, police have set up pickets and check points around the airport as well as on the roads leading to the airport. “All the commuters and pedestrians are being checked properly by police on the pickets to thwart any possible terror attack,” the ASP added. Well-equipped policemen are also patrolling around the airport, he said.
