LAHORE - At least 12 suspects were detained by the city police yesterday as cops stepped up security sweep across the provincial metropolis. The arrested suspects were shifted to unknown places for interrogation.

A police spokesman said the police arrested 12 suspects during the combing operations launched in different parts of the metropolis late Thursday night. The policemen were using biometric machines to verify the particulars of individuals.

On the orders of DIG (Operations) Dr Haider Ashraf, the city police are conducting search and combing operations in Lahore on regular basis as part of the national action plan. In addition to Afghan settlements, the police are searching hotels, inns, and hostels, and private accommodations to hunt down suspected elements. All the divisional police officers are directed to personally supervise the combing operations.  The arrests were made yesterday in Lahore as police launched combing operations in Mughalpura, Railways Station, Punjab University Old Campus and New Campus area, the spokesman said.

Railway station combed

The lawmen launched operation cleanup at the Lahore Railway Station to avert any untoward incident on the occasion of Eidul Azha, APP reported. The police got evacuated the railway station from the homeless people and other suspected persons over security concerns. Extra contingent of cops were deployed at the entry and exit points to scan travelers. The police also launched such a swoop in the parking lots around the railway station.

Special train schedule

The Pakistan Railways would operate eight special trains for Eidul Azha with the first one scheduled to leave from Karachi for Peshawer on Saturday to meet pre-Eid travel needs.

According to a spokesman for the railways, the second Eid train would leave from Quetta to Rawalpindi on September 10 (Saturday), third train will leave for Lahore from Karachi Cantt on September 11 (Sunday). The Fourth train will arrive at Lahore from Rawalpindi on September 12, fifth will leave for Rawalpindi from Lahore the same day, sixth will leave from Peshawer Cantt for Karachi on September 17,seventh one will leave from Rawalpindi for Quetta,whereas eighth Eid train will leave for Karachi from Lahore the same day.

LWMC media briefing

The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has been ready to maintain cleanliness on Eid, Managing Director Bilal Mustafa said.

“The arrangements are made and the staff, including top management, will remain in the field to make sure the implementation at Eid Plan,” he told the media yesterday.

“These efforts can result in even better outcomes if residents of Lahore cooperate the workers by ensuring use of provided waste bags” he said adding that 170 workers along with machinery have been deployed by setting up sanitation & awareness camps in seven major markets.

 Further arrangements such as establishment of 274 sanitation camps with around machinery mainly pickups, establishment of 113 temporary waste collection and transfer stations covering animal waste of private housing societies will be completed two days before Eid, he said.

Awareness material along with customized waste bags will be made available at UC camps, major mosques, stores before Eid. A total of 274 sanitation camps in UCs and 18 other model camps in city will help coordinate sanitation operations. Chairmen UCs and other elective representatives will also be engaged in operational and awareness activities to make them effective and result oriented.
