LAHORE - The enrolment of students in government colleges in the Punjab has been static during the past few years while the enrolment at universities both in public and private sectors was three times higher during the corresponding period which precipitated the Punjab Education Department to intervene for updating the college education in the form of BS (Hons) in selected colleges. This was stated by Secretary Higher Education Ahad Khan Cheema while addressing a meeting of senior college teachers at the Government Islamia College Civil Lines here on Tuesday, the third and last of the series of lecture on the issue. DPI (Colleges) Jalil Tariq, Additional Secretary (P&G) Yawar Hussain and Director Education Dr M Ashraf Mirza were also present on the occasion. The Secretary said that students graduated from the government colleges usually did not fulfill the requirement of employer because they failed to exhibit standardised skills to come up to the employers expectations and the 4 years programme had been designed to meet this requirement. Regarding the BoG, he said that none of the colleges was being privatised. With the formation of BoG, flexibility in decision-making had been delegated to BoGs which would manage the colleges and their functions would remain budget formulation, creation of posts for teachers and staff and re-appropriation only while all other matters would remain unchanged. All these matters have been given legal cover. He said the HED had increased the budget for 26 colleges to the tune of Rs 400 million and the BoGs needed not to increase the tuition fee to meet their expenditures. This is solemn commitment of the government and there should be no speculation on it. He said the necessary rules for the functioning of BOGs were being framed. Those who were protesting against BS (Hons) programme had no argument in their support, he added. Principal of the College, Dr Rao Jalil Ahmad also spoke on the occasion.
