LAHORE: A seminar was organised by the Labour & Human Resource Department in collaboration with Unicef on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, says a press release.
A large number of working children, school children, parents of working children, teachers, civil society representatives, trade unions and employers participated in the event. Labour Welfare Punjab Director General Saleem Hussain was chief guest on this occasion
Saleem said that the Punjab government was fully committed to eradicate child labour particularly its hazardous forms. He stated that many projects have already been launched in various districts of Punjab with cost of Rs 5 billion which aims to eliminate bonded and child labour through education, technical and vocational training and other social services.
He told the audience that survey of child labour in brick kiln sector in in progress on the directions of Chief Minister Punjab The theme of World day Against Child Labour on 12 June, 2015was “No to child Labour and Yes to Quality Education”.
Saleem stated that Labour Department is working on a 5 year project “Combating Worst Forms of Child Labour” in Layyah, Jhang, Chakwal and Jhelum to eliminate hazardous child labour through education, microcredit, skill training and community monitoring. He informed the audience that a project on elimination of bonded labour has already been launched in Bhawalpur, Faisalabad, Gujrat and Sargodha.–PR
Tufail Khan, representative from Unicef, highlighted the interventions of the Unicef in collaboration with Labour Department for the protection of children from economic exploitation. Unicef & Labour department is working closely to build the capacity of the department on Inspection of Child Labour.
