Ex-PIA MD spent Rs3.13m on phone, Senate told

ISLAMABAD - A luxury spending of Rs3.13 million by a former managing director of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) during his tenure by just availing a single facility of mobile, among scores other, gives a little insight that how national carrier reached on the verge of collapse. Predecessor of incumbent MD PIA, Capt Aijaz Haroon, who resigned after four-day long countrywide strike of PIA corporation employees on February 11, 2011, was officially provided with four landline numbers and nine mobile phone connections. During his tenure from April 2008 to January 2011, as MD PIA, Aijaz, spent and eye-opening amount of Rs 2,878,910 (2.88 million approximately) on the account of payment of bills for nine mobile phone connections under his use and another Rs256,903 on four landline phones. The legislators were astonished when these details furnished by Minister for Defence Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar before them through his written reply to a question raised by Senator Talha Mahmood in Upper House of the Parliament on Tuesday. In his written reply, Minister for Defence, also apprised that during years 2008 and 2009, a total of 177 airhostesses were appointed in PIA. Legislators hailing from Balochistan province and Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) protested over non-provision of equal representation in these appointments. Senator Shahid Bugti said only three out of 177 airhostesses recruited during two years belongs from Balochistan province. We were expecting something good from the democratic government but it is of no use, Bugti observed. Senator Kalsoom Pervain said, We have been demanding our rights not alms. Zahid Khan said record shows that almost all the appointees belong to Punjab and Sindh provinces. KPK is also neglected. Upon an uproar from the senators Chairman Senate Farooq H Naek referred the issue to concerned senate standing committee. To another question, in his written reply, Interior Minister Rehman Malik informed the house that during past five years 2,592 vehicles were stolen from different parts of the Federal Capital. The data provided shows the first quarter of year 2011 witnessed a relatively high rate of vehicles stolen incidents from across the heavily guarded Islamabad, as compared to previous years. On February 12, bowing to the four-day countrywide protests of the PIA employees the protests against the former national airline managing director, the government replaced him. This was told after successful talks between the government and the PIAs Joint Action Committee (JAC) at Islamabad. Interior Minister Rehman Malik, flanked by Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar and PALPA President Sohail Baloch, said that all the demands of the PIA employees had been accepted and the MD had resigned from his post.
