Pakistan keeps defence spending to only 16pc  of total budget

ISLAMABAD   -  Despite major challenges on borders, internal security situation, enhanced defence spending by India and military equipment buying, Pakistan has focused on indigenization and kept the defence spending to only 16 percent of the total budget 2021-22.

According to the budget documents, an amount of Rs 1370 billion has been allocated for the defence services for the fiscal year 2021-22. The total outlay of the budget is 8487 billion. Total allocation for the Defence Division has been set at Rs 1380 billion out of which 3.6 billion have been earmarked for the Defence Division and Rs6.9 billion for the federal government educational institutions in cantonments and garrisons. Of the Rs 1370 billion allocation for defence services, an amount of Rs 2.3 billion would be spent to meet the employees’ related expenses, Rs 788m for operating expenses and  Rs.24m for employees’ retirement benefits, according to the documents. The budget revolves round 3Ds on the expenditures front including debt servicing, defense and development, according to the officials.
