Killing of teens sparks violent protests

| Police cite property dispute behind shootout

LAHORE - Two teen boys were killed and a man wounded critically in a brazen gun-attack near Peer Makki Darbar on Friday evening. The attackers fled instantly.

Police investigators said some property dispute was behind the shooting. It was not clear yet how the gunfire began on a busy road. The police were investigating the shooting.

Relatives took to the streets and staged a strong protest demonstration in front Lady Wallington Hospital, triggering worst traffic mess in many parts of the town.

The deceased were identified by police as 16-year-old Awwal Khan, a resident of Bajaur Agency and 19-year-old Shahid Nawaz, a resident of Vehari district. The third victim Zair Wali was admitted to the Mayo hospital with multiple bullet injuries.

Dozens of relatives and family friends of the victims staged a sit-in by placing dead bodies on the Ravi Road in front of the Lady Wallington Hospital. They chanted anti-police slogans and demanded the government to ensure immediate arrest of the killers. The protesters also smashed the windowpanes of two government-run buses by throwing stones to express their anger. Also, they blocked the main Ravi Road by setting tyres on fire.

The hours-long protest caused worst traffic mess on the Mall Road, Lower Mall, and Data Darbar and its adjacent localities. The traffic police were left with no other choice except to divert the vehicular traffic towards alternative routes.

Heavy police reached the spot including senior police officers to engage the protesters. The city police officers assured the protesters that the killers would be arrested soon but they refused to end

the protest.

The police were negotiating with the angry protesters till late Friday night to get the roads cleared. No arrest was made yet.
