ISLAMABAD - Muhammad Ijaz Abbasi, President Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), has shown serious concern over endless power shortage in the country which is badly hurting the business and commercial activities. In a statement issued here on Monday, he said the power crisis in the country had now touched new heights of about 4,500 MW causing massive unscheduled loadshedding and government should take urgent remedial measures to improve the situation as soon as possible. ICCI President said it was almost impossible for business and industry to flourish in an environment where 6 to 8 hours power shutdown was being experienced daily. He said commercial and industrial units needed steady power supply to run their machines and business activities but the current frequent power outages were causing great damages to economic activities in the country. He feared if this trend continued for the next few months, many industrial units would be left with no option but to close their operations, as they couldn't afford to run their businesses in loss. Abbasi stressed for the need of bringing on stream 7 thermal powerhouses within minimum possible time, which had been closed for annual maintenance to mitigate the problem. He said the economy was confronted with very tough challenges and the country needed enhanced investment.
