ISLAMABAD - The district administration left the citizens of the twin cities at the mercy of notorious lawbreakers on the eve of Independence Day. The visitors have come up with numerous complaints regarding some serious violations of law, TheNation learnt. The late hours of the Independence Night proved exasperating for the visitors who wished to celebrate Independence Night on the streets of the twin cities. Several incidents of harassment, indiscriminate use of crackers, aerial firing, one-wheeling and eve teasing were reported. It was observed that traffic wardens and police cops remained absent on the densely populated Blue Area and other important localities on the Independence Night, thus allowing the youngsters to freely resort to misadventures without being checked or hindered. Likewise, other areas like F-10 Markaz, Jinnah Super Market, Aabpara, Meldoy, and I-10 Markaz also remained the hub of notorious brats. Some youngsters throwing crackers and squibs inside the cars of the motorists were seen in the markets of the Capital. The frequent use of crackers, hooting and eve teasing terrified many female visitors who had to return back to their homes in order to avoid any untoward incident. Rawalpindi too, witnessed the same situation with several such incidents of law infringement in Saddar, Commercial Market, College Road, Raja Bazar, IJP Road, Muree Road, Bank Road and other adjoining areas. Incidents of aerial firing with pistols, guns and kalashinkovs were also reported Traffic wardens were seen helpless against the rash motor bikers who exhibited dangerous stunts like one- wheeling and racing in Blue Area, Islamabad Highway, Muree Road, and other densely populated areas. "Its really shocking to see such misadventures and serious violations of law in the heart of Capital, especially near Parliament Lodges and National Assembly", said prominent physician Dr. Saleh Hassan. "One wonders why law enforcement authorities remained sleeping on such an important event", he added while demanding stern action against those officials who were responsible for this negligence. In addition, the twin cities also experienced worst traffic jams on different roads, with the authorities concerned unable to take hold of the situation. "The events like Independence Day are meant to be enjoyed and celebrated. But due to the absence of any organized setup, we end up suffering on such occasions", said Tanveer, a visitor from Gujrat. It is appropriate to pinpoint that SSP (Traffic), Zubair Hashmi, vowed to curb one-wheeling and other traffic violations in a press conference, a few days ago. However, the unjustified negligence on part of authorities concerned has raised several questions regarding the credibility, efficiency and integrity of model traffic police, city police and district administration. Despite numerous media reports revealing the sale and purchase of explosives in the twin cities, no action has been initiated against the culprits till the filing of this report.
